On June 8th, 2021 Doreen Yvonne Fiddler peacefully passed away at the age of 88 years in Edmonton, Alberta.
Doreen was born on a nice spring day, April 21st, 1933 in Pierceland, Saskatchewan. She was the third child of Maggie and Fred Fiddler. The family moved to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan after her father passed in the fall of 1942. Doreen and her older sister Irene helped raise the four younger kids while mom and older brother Lucien worked to provide for the family. Grandpa and grandma Fiddler lived next door to their 1 acre homestead. They lived in a single room shack, so Grandpa Fiddler built onto it.
When Doreen was about fifteen, she got her first job as a waitress in the local hotel. Had her first child in 1954 and her life as a mother began. She went on to have six more children over the next twelve years. She stayed home to raise them. Her home held plenty of family gatherings. Doreen would make the best bannock & hamburger soup (aka hangover soup). Everyone looked forward to her cooking and would stop in on the regular, knowing Doreen would have fresh bannock on the counter.
As the years went on, she enjoyed playing bingo. Never went to bingo alone. Always with a sister, her son a few times or her only daughter Brenda. Hosted many a game of cards (gin) with siblings, children, nieces and nephews. Loved going to Sunday Mass.
Left to mourn her loss are her three sisters Norma, Alma, Darlene and her brother Robert. 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. An abundance of close friends that were considered family.
Predeceased by her loving mother Margaret Laliberte, father Fred Fiddler. Siblings Gloria, Delores, Irene, Lucien, Sonny Boy (Fred), Joseph (cheejoe) and grandson Junior.
The family would like to thank the unit 3C staff at Dickinsfield Care Centre for taking such wonderful care of our mother.
At the request of Doreen there will be no services or celebration of life. However at a later date (yet to be determined) everyone will be invited to escort her ashes to be laid to rest with her mother.
My dear, dear friend of many years. So, so many great memories of Doreen and family. Doreen, a woman I so much respected, appreciated and loved. A generous soul with a loving heart. Over the years, and in many ways members of my family was embraced by her family and hers with mine. To this day my daughter refers to Doreen as “NOH-KOM”. As for her delicious hamburger soup ( I didn’t know there was such a thing – not in my world anyway! Doreen showed me how to make it, and to this day I still make it, as do many others. So, so many good times, lots of laughter, a little mischief once in awhile, perhaps a little naughtiness here and there, but always loads of fun! Doreen was one of those women that comes along (if your lucky)once in a lifetime and chooses you as her friend.
I feel privileged to have been one of those friends…
