Patricia Mary Whelan (Trish)

The family of Patricia Whelan sadly announces the passing of their loving daughter and sister on July 16, 2021 at the age of 59.

Patricia is survived by her mother, Joan Whelan, her brothers Lawrence Whelan (Della Toews), Kevin Whelan (Debbie), her sister, Kathleen Whelan, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, William Whelan.

Trish was born in 1962 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She spent most of her early years in Saskatoon. She was a great swimmer, skier and softball player. Early on, she fell in love with horses. She loved to ride and compete. Trish treasured her horse, Dublin and her dog, Paisley. She loved to vacation in California and would often compete in a local horse show.

She was dedicated to lifelong learning, receiving her Diploma of Psychiatric Nursing and Nursing from Wascana Institute in Regina in 1983. She continued her education in Edmonton where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta in 1984, her Masters of Health Studies in 2006 from Athabasca University, and finally, her PhD in Social Sciences from Royal Roads University in 2018. It was through this experience that she became involved with at-risk youth in Edmonton. The impact of her passion and commitment to the empowerment of youth using the Emergency Departments in Edmonton will be long remembered and appreciated.

In 2006, she moved to Beaumont where she continued her work as a nurse and educator. Patricia excelled in patient care in the Emergency Departments at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital in Camrose. As an instructor, she was committed to encouraging excellence in her students. More recently, she worked at Alberta Health Services as an Education Consultant where she was an inspiring and accomplished leader. She helped to implement a new clinical charting system, working with passion and optimism helping to train staff and students across the province.

Trish fought cancer for the last 7 months with grace and dignity. Her family, friends and co-workers will love her and miss her always.

Thank you to all the angels at Chateau Vitaline in Beaumont, Leduc Community Hospital and at Norwood Hospice.

A celebration of Patricia’s life will be held at Church of our Lady in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on August 28th 2021 at 11:00 am.

I, like others, was stunned to hear of Trish’s passing. We worked together years ago (RAH/Edm EMS), I used to cut Trish’s hair and then again our paths crossed as she was a client of mine. We didn’t speak that often, but when we did it was like no time had passed. I miss you Trish- with those amazing green eyes. Rest in peace precious RN.

It is belated, but condolences to all of you, those that loved her.

I regret that I have just learned of the passing of Trish in 2021. My heartfelt condolences to the Whelan family and friends of Trish. As a fellow cohort member of her doctoral programme at RRU, we shared many emergency services / military stories together that had us crying laughing a few times. Trish’s good humour and compassion for others made her a standout amongst others. She made a difference and will missed. Rest easy Nursey Trish.

Dr. Katherina Tarnai-Lokhorst, DSocSci, P.Eng, P.Geo(hon)

Just heard about Trish’s passing and am deeply saddened. Trish was my best buddy at Royal Roads during our doctoral program together. I loved her so much and, even though we hadn’t seen each other for many years, I will miss her.

Ah, Trish, I hope you are at peace and am sending prayers for you and your loved ones. God bless.

It was a great privilege to know you Trish, and for the time we lived in Beaumont to be included your life. Our friendship formed when you built your house and moved into Beaumont. We shared lots of dinners together, horse rides and simply time spent together in the hot tub. my most memorable time is when I was pregnant and had a minor car accident you took me past the protocol of the hospital right into care just demonstrating your motherly love you showed me time after time. Your passion for animals and dedication to the nursing programs you led where just the tip of the iceberg to the great woman you are, I know the countless hours you put into the nurses you taught. Sadly we missed time together while you where bravely fighting this cancer, We love you and will cherish the memories we had with you.
Rest in Peace Beautiful xoxoxo

I am so sad to hear this. We rode together for years and met up at several dog shows in the last few years. I had no idea she was battling cancer. My condolences to her family.

It is with such sadness that I read my friend Trish’s obituary . We enjoyed horses, dogs and horse shows together and she loved being busy with Friday and Paisley. Of course I knew she got her doctorate after many hours of hard work but I did not know how much she gave and achieved in her job at the hospital! She was a very special person and will be missed by many? My sympathies to her family and friends.

I was extremely saddened to hear of Trish’ passing. I had worked on the same floor as she did with AHS, and she was such a friendly lady. She liked to joke sarcastically and was very welcoming when I first started at that location. We talked of her horse and her passion for competing. She will be missed and sincere condolences to her family.

Donna Lee Bauer

My sincere condolences to all the family. I remember Patricia as a strong woman and a free spirit. So sorry to hear of her passing.

Reana Bridgelal

Please accept my deepest condolences to you and the family. To learn that Trish passed was very upsetting and shocking. I enjoyed working with her at Alberta health services with her spunky attitude and positive nature. We would often talk about her horse adventures and her dog. I will truly miss this beautiful soul and i know that where she is, she is well taken care of as she was a kind and caring soul who helped many. I will miss you Trish

I will absolutely miss Trish’s smile, positive energy and sense of humour in the office we shared. She was an awesome person, a great colleague and excellent healthcare professional. A deep loss for all who knew her.

Sharon Wilson

I worked in the same office with Trish since 2014. She was an interesting lady and a great pot luck organizer and participant. She taught us all about peas in a grilled cheese sandwich. She would share all the work she had to do during her journey to her PhD with me and I loved to tease and call her Dr. Trish. The saddest thing is the marginalized youth she cared about will not have the benefit of her knowledge. She worked here and at St Mary’s because she cared as a nurse! I will miss her in this office.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of Trish, I worked with her at the RAHER, several years ago and was shocked to hear of her battle with CA, so very sad for your loss??

I am so, so saddened to hear about the loss of Trish. Trish and I worked in the same building. Trish was always so friendly and easy to talk to. She knew I was nervous about needles so she always accompanied me when we got our annual flu shot at work. Sending my heartfelt condolences and thoughts to Trish’s family and friends. I will miss her kindness, humor and warm energy.
