John Garanis 1936 – 2025
It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of John Garanis, who departed this life at the age of 88. Predeceased by his parents Athanasios (1985) and Maria (1996), a husband of 58 years to Myrna, father to Demetrius (Jennifer) and Athanasious, and cherished grandfather to Zachary (RIP), Alex, and Dax.
John will be remembered with love by all who knew him. John is survived by his siblings: Theodore, Evangelitsa, Aristea, Vasiliki, Stavroula, and Dimitrios, and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews across Canada, the United States, Germany, and Greece. Born in Greece,
John’s journey took him to Germany in the 1950s before settling in Canada, where he built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community. A man of many passions, he was known for his enjoyment of hunting,fishing, gardening, and nurturing fruit trees, grapevines, and a thriving tomato garden. His hands were rarely still. John was a proud past member of the Unity Masonic Lodge.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the dedicated palliative care team at St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital, whose compassion and care were a comfort in John’s final days.
In lieu of flowers or a public memorial, the family invites donations to be made in John’s memory to WILDNorth Animal Rescue or the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. Memories, and condolences may be shared here.
