We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Harmon Duncan on Friday, March 15, 2025 at the age of 90 years. He was the man of honor at his wonderful 90th Birthday Celebration held at the Duncan Homestead in September 2024.

Harmon was married to his lovely wife and life companion Lou (Hoffmann) for over 65 years until her passing in December 2020. They have two children Pennie (Verne) and Rory (Lorette) and Morgan.

Harmon and Lou were very strong, hard working, devoted parents who did everything for their family. They lived on an acreage near Duffield, Alberta for many years. Everyone was always welcome at the house and we have many fond memories of sharing good food, chatting and laughing together. Harmon and Lou had many friends and adventures as snowbirds in Yuma, Arizona. They built a life together filled with love, family and lasting friendships.

Harmon was born on September 2, 1934 at Blue Ridge, Alberta and grew up on the family homestead. His parents were Robert Duncan born at Mt. Zion, Minnesota and Nancy (Jones) born at Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta. He was the second oldest of 10 children Charlie, Harmon, Chan, Ernie, Ray, Keri, Bobby, Gord, Trudi and Grace. He is survived by Keri (John), Gord and Grace (Steve).

Harmon worked construction and as a millwright for TransAlta Utilities at the Wabamun Plant until his retirement. With strong steady hands he took on the most challenging jobs with precision and excellence. He was very mechanically inclined and could fix anything with a motor. He also found time to work on friends’ vehicles and equipment. He was always there to help when asked, no matter the circumstances.

Harmon was not your typical 90 year old. He was very independent, strong willed, physically fit and active. He never really retired and with his strong passion for golf, continued to work and play at various golf courses in the summer. His fondness of the great outdoors enabled him to enjoy fishing, hunting and camping. He was an avid Oilers fan, a good pool player and liked all things western, movies, music and rodeos.

Harmon brought kindness, good humor, a sense of fun and laughter to all those who knew him. His favorite spot was sitting around the campfire at the Duncan Homestead cabin, sharing memories and good times. He had a remarkable memory to relay detailed stories of his past with family and friends.

Thank you for the kindness and care received by the staff at Salem Manor Nursing Home in Leduc, Alberta.

Harmon requested cremation take place at Simply Cremations in Edmonton, Alberta.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Duncan Homestead on the July long weekend 2025.

Harmon will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. May we find comfort in our many wonderful memories of Harmon. He will be forever in our hearts.

William Murphy

Bill-2.jpg

William was born in Edmonton the second youngest of eight children of Molly and Patrick Murphy. At a young age the family moved to (Rocky) Rochester, north of Edmonton, to establish a homestead. William became accustomed to the hard work of a homestead life, a trademark that would serve him well for the rest of his 96 years of life. William later farmed in various areas of Northern Alberta until he was stricken with a severe medical condition that required major surgery and a long stay in hospital. This medical incident caused William to sell his land, vehicles and equipment to pay for this medical expense as there was no universal health care at that time. William went on to work for various companies as a mechanic, handyman and supervisor. He was once told that he was the best worker but the worst supervisor as he would rather just do the job himself and get it done.

Uncle Bill’s hunting was legendary as he would walk many miles back in the bush and shoot a moose then call the nephews to help pack the beast out. We suggested that he carry a salt shaker and just eat it on the spot.

William was an excellent bowler and won the world championship five pin bowling in 1975. This was an incredible feat given that Bill had lost his thumb on his dominant hand but it made him the only bowler to be a gold medal winner without a thumb.

William will be remembered for his kind gentle spirit, his willingness to help others and for the true gentleman that he was.

Rest well Uncle Bill

Linda Irene Poulsen

Linda

In Loving Memory of Linda Irene Poulsen
February 15, 1942 – February 18, 2025
Linda Irene Poulsen passed away at the age of 83, surrounded by family and friends.
She recently moved from Drayton Valley back to Sherwood Park with her beloved partner of 40 years, Bruce McKinney, to be closer to family.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Anna Lehto, her sister Lisa, and her only son, Michael Poulsen.
She is survived by her loving partner, Bruce McKinney; her stepson, Michael McKinney (Michele), whom she considered a second son; and her stepdaughter, Leslie (Arnie) Ziganash. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Calvin (Katie), Amber, Garret, and Brett (Emily), as well as her great-grandchildren, Maddi, Evie, Max, and Remington. Linda will be dearly missed by her close friends Carla, Don, and Trent. She is also survived by her nieces, Veronica and Carol, and her nephew, Gary. Linda’s friendships were a source of great joy, including those she made at her final residence in Sherwood Park and within the Drayton Valley Art Club.
Born in Vancouver, B.C., Linda was raised on a small poultry farm. From an early age, she was drawn to art, finding inspiration in the gardens, orchards, and animals around her. In high school, she majored in Fine Arts, excelling in her studies and participating in several travelling group exhibits.
Linda married her first husband and, in 1963, welcomed her son, Michael. His developmental challenges led her to become a dedicated advocate for individuals with disabilities. She set aside her artistic pursuits to focus on his care and well-being.
In 1997, after ensuring Michael was settled in a supervised home and retiring from her bookkeeping career at Coop Press, Linda finally had the freedom to return to her artistic passion. She took various workshops to refine her skills, specializing in water colour florals and graphite portraits. She was an active member of the Drayton Valley art community, Continuing Adult Education, and took on commissioned work. Her artwork is displayed in private collections across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and the Yukon.
Beyond her love of painting, Linda enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
In accordance with her wishes, no formal service will be held. At a later date a private Celebration of Life will take place in her honour. Please raise a glass of wine in her memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s name may be made to:
